Jesus Christ Superstar is a Rock Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber, with lyrics by Tim Rice. First staged on Broadway in 1971, it highlights political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus. The opera is based very loosely on the Gospels’ account of the last week of Jesus’ life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem, and ending with the Crucifixion. It was controversial in its time and even today it can stir up great emotions.
Jesus Christ Superstar will be performed in the Grand Opera House, Belfast from Tue 1-Sat 5 Nov 2011.
If success is measured by the number of nominations and awards, then 2010-11 was a great year for the Ulster. The AIMS Awards for 2010-11 produced no fewer than seven nominations for the Ulster.
Our 2010 summer show, Little Shop of Horrors, received two nominations - Best Ensemble and Best Comedian (Ross Chambers), while our autumn show, Guys and Dolls, received an impressive five nominations, including Best Overall Show, Best Actor (Kerry Rooney), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Gerry McBrien), Best Chorus and Best Musical Director for the hardest working man in show business, Wilson Shields.
Congratulations to our AIMS Award winners:
Best Musical Director - Wilson Shields
Best Actor - Kerry Rooney, for Nathan Detroit
Ulster Operatic Company presented Rock: The Musicals at Belvoir Players Studio for two nights in June 2011.
These productions included many well-known songs from the great rock musicals such as We Will Rock You, Jesus Christ Superstar, Grease, Chess, Rent, Moulin Rouge, and Sister Act, as well as several lesser-known numbers such as Petrified from Taboo and My Strongest Suit from Aida (the Elton & Tim Rice version).
As usual with The Ulster, we welcomed a number of new members to the company. The highly talented and experienced Jennifer Rooney joined us as choreographer for the first time, working alongside Wilson Shields (MD) and Mal Hanna (staging).
It is a testament to the strength in depth of our company that no fewer than 28 different singers featured as soloists or duettists in the 32 songs. Furthermore, Judith Neill and Johanna Johnston each choreographed a routine (Holding Out for a Hero and My Strongest Suit respectively.)
There were only a few seats left for each performance, and audience reactions and feedback were highly complimentary.
